Getting to Zen = The Intersection of Personal Development and Running

by Lisa H. on July 19, 2011

Personal Development and RunningI haven’t talked about my running too much on this blog. In fact, I mention it only a couple of times in my articles and give it a short sentence in my about page. Originally I thought about starting blog about running, but after much thought, decided to combine the two. Personal development hits every aspect of our lives and running is no exception. Interestingly, several of the bloggers that I follow started running as part of changing their lives for the better. Leo Babauta of Zen Habits, the largest personal development blog in the world, being one of them.  Simply put, personal development can make you a better runner and running can make you a better person.

This decision didn’t come lightly. Running is a big part of my life and I felt like I was holding back by not sharing it with you. It is by no means what I spend the most time on but it is integral to who I am and what I am about. It is what I do first thing in the morning, it is my meditation,my church,  my companion, my joy, my love. I enjoy everything about it (except injuries) and look forward to hitting the roads and trails and toeing the line in competitions.

I also think that including my passion for running in the blog will help to differentiate me from other personal development blogs. This will make for a better long-term strategy for Getting to Zen.

I will continue to write the articles that you are used to as well as articles on nutrition, training, gear and other things running-related.

I am not going to make any drastic changes to the blog. The changes will come slowly over the next week or two as I flesh out the brand. For now I am keeping the title “Getting to Zen;” however, the tag line will change.

This is a big step for me and I am not sure what the results of this change will be. I just know that this is a part of me that I need to express. Sometimes in life we need to change direction; a step to the right or left can make a big difference.

Thank you so much for supporting me and Getting to Zen. Please feel free to share whatever you’d like.

To Be honest Lisa, Running helps me maintain my zen, it burns up some of that excuse
Adrenaline. Its a great way to get around, as well as being a great warm up before yoga/ qi gong practice.

Happy running. Lisa :-)

That video was awesome–a lot of depth in the lyrics. The fact that he was wearing Vibram Five Fingers made it even cooler. Thank you so much for sharing that link. I looked at some other videos by that artist and am now a fan. The lyrics in some of his songs blew me away.

This is called “pivoting” in the startup world. I’m doing it myself.
