The two week water challenge has ended and boy was it interesting. First I would like to say that it was a lot harder than I thought it would be. On the first day of the challenge, I thought “no problem”, I just have to fill my water bottle three times through the day and drink it to empty. Well, that proved to be much easier said than done.
The fist day went off without a hitch I filled it three times and drank it to empty. I was even pleasantly surprised at my accomplishment. Don’t get me wrong. I had to make a conscious effort to meet my goal. Interestingly I had been so dehydrated that even after drinking my 64oz, I was still thirsty. I thought “this is great.” I am giving my body exactly what it needs. But by the third day, My enthusiasm had waned and I found it harder to drink down my ounces, even coming up a little short for the rest of the fist week.
As far as the second week… My son started daycare in the beginning of June and has given us three colds since then. I am still trying to recover from the third cold which I caught at the beginning of the second week of the challenge. My throat was so sore that I could barely get anything down, and on one of the days, what went down, came up (sorry to be so graphic).
So, all in all, the water challenge for me was at best, a good attempt. Although I did not meet my goal, I learned a lot.
Having a schedule makes it easier
Not having a schedule really hurt me. I realized that since I don’t drink enough water naturally, I need to treat my fluid intake like I do other important habits in my life like exercising and brushing my teeth. It is not enough to jus say that I will drink when I am thirsty; Because by the time I am thirsty, not only am I dehydrated, but so much time has one by that I have now put myself in a position where I have to cram the water down which is neither pleasurable or good for good habit forming.
It’s gotta taste good
I don’t know why, but I don’t like the taste of water. Not all of the time, but most of the time. I mean there are those days where nothing beats a tall glass of ice cold water; especially after a hard bout of exercise. But for the most part I like it flavored up a bit. During the challenge I used mostly lemon; although sometimes I put a swish of orange juice or apple cider to spice things up a bit.
The results
I noticed that the more water I drank, the better I felt (this is based on the first week). I didn’t feel as lethargic at the end of the day as I did before the increase and was more motivated to exercise. This was a bit of an eye opener for me. I hadn’t thought about hydrating being a motivation to exercise. But I guess your body knows that when it is depleted of fluids, the last thing that it wants to do is to expel more of them. But it makes sense. Drink more water, have more energy.
I also noticed improvements in my skin, even after a week. It was smoother and more supple. Simply put, it looked hydrated. All in all I was happy with the results of the challenge, even thought I was not”perfect” at it.
Final thoughts
Water is essential for optimal health and based on my results from the challenge I would like to continue to drink more of it. I now know that it is not a matter of drinking when I am thirsty, but, like everything else, committing to forming a new habit.
Your turn:
I’d love to hear feedback from those of you who participated in the challenge. Feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email.
What were your challenges?
What were your final results?
Do you think it is something that you will continue to do?

Hi, My name is Lisa. I am a mother, girlfriend, blogger, runner and happiness seeker.
I started blogging in March 2010 as a way for me to grow and help others by sharing what I learned.
My personal development journey began about 15 years ago.

Hi Lisa,
Dehydation induces physical and emotional pain in me, and makes me physically tired.
I have found having a regular schedule helps. Tremendously.
My day consists of a stupendous cup of coffee in the morning, a *very* brisk cup of tea late in the afternoon or early evening, then I drink water flavored with a squeeze of lemon until bed time. It’s been working out really well for last 18 months or so. When I miss a day or two, I find it really hard to mentally concentrate.
Thanks for your comment the day, really appreciate your attention. I’ll have more about what I’ve been doing soon. (“Soon” now means within a couple months!)
Hi Dave,
Dehydration can lead to some pretty serious consequences. The challenge has made me realize how important scheduling is even with something as natural as drinking. A “Stupendous” cup of coffee? Can I get that at Starbucks? It looks like you made a conscious decision to drink more water and are now reaping the benefits. Congratulations. My plan is to continue my increased water intake. No problem. I appreciate all of your help. I look forward to hearing what you are up too. :-)
Hey Lisa, great to hear about your challenge, it sounds like you gained a lot from it (and not just water!)
I drink a lot of water when I can, although I find myself lacking at times to keep up. Maybe a schedule would help here, especially during the busy periods of my days.
Thanks for sharing this Lisa :-)
Hi Stuart,
Thank you. Yes, I most definitely did! The biggest thing I learned is how important having a schedule is when making a new change. It was a good experiment and I plan to keep up on my hydration.
There’s just nothing quite like the real thing. I love all my vitamins and protein drinks, but for me deep appreciation for fresh clean water is a great reminder of the abundance we can so easily take for granted.
Hi Rob,
Thanks for stopping by. I know what you mean. Just today I filled my water bottle up 3/4 ice and the rest water. I had forgotten how good ice-cold water could be. Very true, not everyone has access to clean water. It is heartbreaking.
Hey Lisa,
does drinking plenty of water helps to reduce dark spots under your eyes??
Hi Amit, yes it does. Drinking lots of water has many benefits for the skin. My skin always looks better after a healthy dose of hydration. I found this article that also gives other ways of reducing those circles.
after reading all the posts here (as I was goin for a MDew) I going to the sink..for a glass.I have alot of leg problems with sciatica nerve and it can’t hurt to drink water instead and see what happens….Thx I have gotten alot out of your writings.
Hi Steve,
Thank you. Hmmm… Mountain Dew is really high in sugar and caffeine, but I am sure you already knew that. ;-) I would be interested in hearing how drinking more water affects your sciatica. I am not a doctor, but I am a runner and have experienced intermittent pain there. What helped for me was stretching and strengthening. Keep us at the blog posted on whether water makes a difference. :-)
Hi Lisa,
Just thought I would drop a note and let you know I have been doing the water test and been drinking just that since the last note and been drinking 64oz’s a day or more . I would never would believe that water would give you more energy than caffeine and sugar…Hmmm. I think it even helps a persons state of mind. I haven’t had a dew since last Friday and it seems maybe the pain has been receded a little, Keep you posted…Thx Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the update. Great!!! Yes, sugar, caffeine, excess carbs all slow the body body down. I notice the energy difference most when I am running. If I don’t drink enough (am dehydrated) I run slower than if I am hydrated. Plus I just don’t feel well. I too am still working on getting this down. I don’t particularly enjoy plain water and although there are ways that I can flavor it, I am still not drinking enough. It really is about forming a new habit. I think it most definitely helps with your state of mind. When your body feels good, it is easier for your mind to feel good. Good news on your pain reduction. Yes, keep me posted. Also, remember to get enough electrolytes. Drinking too much water can lead to unwanted consequences. :-)
