Do You Have and Impoverished Mind?

by Lisa H. on August 7, 2011

This is the first in a series of articles that I will be posting on abundance. Lately I have been focusing on what I don’t have instead of what I do and it has caused me nothing but misery. Although I have a tremendous amount to be grateful for (home, job, wonderful family), I was comparing myself to those I perceived to have even better (bigger home, more job flexibility).

Knowing that the quickest way out of misery is gratitude, I decided to shift my thinking to how abundant I really am and to share my thoughts on abundance with you.

Abundant thinking is basically a form of positive thinking. It is a deep appreciation for who you are, what you have and the relationships you have cultivated. Thinking abundantly does not mean that you should stop striving for more goodness and accept your lot in life. It is actually the opposite. When you acknowledge how abundant your life already is, more good things come to you. It is actually the perfect time to put your wishes out to the universe.

I’ts not about money

Abundant thinking is not about money, although there is a strong financial component to it; after all, if it is hard to put food on the table, it is more challenging to think abundantly–not impossible–more challenging. Similarly, being rich, may not relate to money at all. We have all heard about rich, unhappy people. We read about them every day in the newspapers and see them on tv; people who have an abundance of money but who are bereft emotionally. Completely devoid of peace, love, passion, life, community and sometimes family. Real abundance is a life philosophy. It is the freedom to spend time doing the things that matter with the people that matter.

The law of abundance

Abundant thinking is all about changing how you view your personal circumstances so that you can change how you view the world. The Law of Abundance is one of the Universal Laws. These are also referred to as Spiritual Laws or Laws of Nature. Universal Laws are those immutable principles that governes how the entire cosmos continues to exist and thrive.

While the very notion that these laws exist may prove too “out there” for some people, there is a sound basis in science for several of them. For example, the Law of Cause & Effect states that any action produces a result in exact proportion to the action which initiated it. This idea goes back to Biblical times. It says in Galatians: “Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Some people think of this in terms of Karma. Others will use the phrase: “ What goes around, comes around.” It all amounts to the same thing.

Universal laws

Universal Laws work whether you believe in them or not. Those who do not believe in them choose by default to believe that life is a random series of events that they have little or no control over, and that there is no purpose or underlying reason why things happen as they do.

The Law of Abundance states that the universe is continually and effortlessly producing, creating unlimited resources for us to take advantage of. You only have to look at Nature to know this is true.

Breaking the law

Breaking any law is apt to cause problems. That is true of man-made laws and those handed down by the universe. Equally, misinterpreting laws can cause trouble. You may fully believe that there is abundance out there, as evidence by those individuals who appear to “have it all”, but you may be seeking similar abundance in the wrong ways.

If your motivation for achieving more is to focus on what you do not have, you are not thinking in tune with the Law of Abundance. Abundant thinking is not about working more hours to accumulate more belongings, or becoming miserly with your money because you want your bank accounts to appear more abundant. These attitudes work in direct opposition to the Law of Abundance. These are reactions based on fear and panic, and Universal Laws always work in peace and balance.

Change your attitude to one of gratitude and watch yourself become abundant.

Very nice article Lisa ;-)

Abundance is all around us. I found that when my heart is completely clear of things I used to hold on to…I have the ability to tap into abundance because giving and receiving is balanced and my heart knows how to receive love. Abundance within the universe comes from the pure energy source of LOVE, which is the basis for the law of the universe. Just like law of attraction, we attract where we are at within the heart. So even if our heart is not as clear, but we have been practicing the law…we will receive regardless. But when the heart is completely clear…there is more of an abundance than you could even imagine with your mind. Always receiving what you need right on time. A clear heart will also make it easy for you to give.

Thank you again for this article Lisa!

Hi Keny,
I love what you said about attracting where we are within the heart. That is so true. And so we must be mindful what our intentions are and what we are holding on to, because it will come back to us ten-fold. The universe works in mysterious ways. Abundance and good fortune always comes right on time. :-)

I don’t know if my mind is impoverished, but it is always hungry :)

LOL! I like that. Hunger is a great motivator. Right now I am hungry for the life I am trying to create. Thanks for stopping by. :-)

Very true, Lisa. Whenever you feel impoverishment of any kind (be it big or small) – it is YOU that is causing the trouble. Accept this as true, and watch what happens!

The trouble around abundance exist in wrong thinking. Living less than wonderfully rich never represents our original nature. Even Jesus, a man of modest means, was incredibly rich. He had whatever he wanted when he wanted it. How rich is that! Why not carry around a sack of gold if we can do that? We must stick with it for all we are worth – because we are worth all of it!

Thanks Rob. Most of the problems we create come from our minds. When our minds are free of chaos and clutter, we can live lives that are representative of that. I like what you said about living less than wonderfully rich doesn’t represent our original nature. To be abundant, we must think abundantly.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I know plenty about wanting more all the time. It is a destructive pattern of thought. This best way to break this is: Gratitude.

Hi Vic,
Thank you for stopping by. Well said– a pattern it is indeed. And like all patterns, we can at any time choose to do different. It is about striking the balance between wanting more (connection, joy, happiness) and being grateful for what we have. It is also about recognizing when we have achieved what really matters. :-)

Hey Lisa,

An abundant mind is fixated on feeling your going to get more, obtain more and deserve more. It about putting yourself as wealthy, mentally, before it can be achieve. And dont forget working to ass off for it.Yeah, cant forget that part.

LOL! Very true. If you do nothing, you get nothing. Working your @!# off is a big part of getting what you want. Even if what you want is to rest, you must train yourself out of the habit of going, going, going. Thanks for being so direct. I love it!
